ShopRuche Blog
I stumbled upon this blog via Design*Sponge and I was totally inspired by all the pretty pretty things in their clothing line and all the great projects featured - including a step by step method for making gorgeous paper flowers and tips for using cornstarch to make temporary wallpaper adhesive - fantastic tip: if you use fabric as wallpaper and you get tired of the pattern, you can just remove...

Handmade Detroit Visits Etsy HQ
Some of the HD peeps had the awesome chance to stop by Etsy’s headquarters in Brooklyn this past April while on a trip to NYC. Their office is just as cool as you would think it is, but even cooler were all the friendly people we met there (even getting a chance to chat with Etsy’s CEO, Maria Thomas!), all who didn’t mind that we came storming through their work day with a video...

Adventures With Patina
I became interested in working with patina or verdigris after seeing the jewelry created by We Dream in Colour a few years ago. Jewelry designer and artist Jade Gedeon creates delicate, colorful, and whimsical pieces. I especially love her use of plant and animal elements. She uses a lot of verdigris and sheer enameling. Because of the wonderful colors and finishes in her work, I spent time...

SMart Camp - Social Media for the Arts
This Saturday I attended the first day of Social Media Art Camp aka. SMart Camp, a two day conference at the Roger Smith Hotel in New York City. The conference focused on how artists and arts organizations are using social media to promote their work, build communities and enthusiasm for their work, and inspire others. I had a wonderful time at the conference. I particularly enjoyed the Social...

Modcloth.com: Fine Arts Dress
Modcloth.com is an amazing website if you love clothes and don’t have a ton of dough. Plus it is based in Pittsburgh and there are some CMU alums involved. Modcloth does a great job editing and updating their selection PLUS they have created very fun and innovative online marketing initiatives through contests, allowing their readers to “Be the Buyer” and give feedback, and...

Behind the Scenes of a Major News Source
“It’s in the nav bar.” “IN the navigation bar.” “THE NAV BAR.” ”IN THE NAV!” “IN THE NAV!!!!” “Why can’t you see it? It’s right there IN THE NAV!” “Seriously, nothing you’ve said so far is scary.” “Well hold onto your socks!” Sigh.

How Far Is Too Far for Free Theatre?
This morning I arrived at Central Park at 8 am to get in line for free Shakespeare in the Park tickets. Turns out I was already more than two hours too late. I woke up at 6:30 am and left the house around 7 am. By the time I got to line there were probably more than 300 hundred people there already. Many of them were curled up in sleeping bags, in blankets, some had set up camp with chairs and...

A Love Letter to Polaroids
I’m happy that the NYT story on Polaroids has been blogged and reblogged in so many places. If you like photos, check out the new Lens Blog on The New York Times website. This gallery of Polaroid photos was a great accompaniment to this article about the challenges about starting up production of Polaroid film again in the Netherlands. The group working on this challenge has named...

Almost, but not quite.
You know how sometimes you have a moment where you feel like you are really on top of things. I had one of those because I paid all my bills online. Then Don sighed, reached over and replugged my laptop headphones into the right hole. I was kind of wondering why the sound was so soft.

Scary is...
…that precocious red headed child actress from the mini-van commercial. She nods her head so eagerly and intensely that it makes my head hurt. She is cruisin’ for a bruisin’.

On Scott from American Idol
"But how would he know what Stevie Wonder looks like when he sings if he's never seen it?"
"He's blind, not stupid. Maybe he read about it it or someone told him."
"READ about it...oh yeah...BRAILLE."
This is why we don't talk to people.

So Why Don't You Say It Out Loud?
I had a blog once. The blog served a specific purpose and I liked writing. I think I want to write again. I think the urge to write again started for three reasons - 1) I read all day at my job. I read news articles, blogs, opinion pieces, reviews - you name it, I read it. 2) I remember writing and I remember liking it. 3) I’m a bit a of a magnet for odd events and slightly weird...
